Home Remedies For Fruit Flies

I love fresh fruits and vegetables. They're yummy, healthy, and make me happy. But one disadvantage of keeping a lot of fruit in your house is that they attract fruit flies.

As a raw foodist , obviously, you don't want to use chemicals to get rid of them so I've searched the internet and tried several home remedies for fruit flies. I imagine you might like to know and try them for yourself. So you too can keep you kitchen free of fruit flies.

Here are the most effective home remedies for fruit flies:

  • Fruit flies love mold and moist. Thus keep your kitchen clean and free from old fruit pieces, peels, open fruit (including lemon). Fruit flies even go into your drains to multiply there. Thus close your drains if you can. Don't keep fruit in your kitchen for more than a day (better to store them in your fridge or outside). Also, the flies don't like cold and wind. Thus opening the window for fresh air ensuring good ventilation is important too.

  • Did you know that fruit flies don't like basil? Keep basil plants in your kitchen and near the fruit bowl. You may also sprinkle some basil leafs on your fruit. This will help keeping the fruit flies away.

  • You can use the bottle trap. Use a bottle filled with an inch of lemonade, juice, wine or piece of fruit (such as banana). Remove the bottle's lid and place a small piece of plastic wrap over the opening. Create several small holes in the top using a wooden toothpick. Set the bottle in the kitchen to trap the flies. They get in, but can't get out. Great way to getting rid of fruit flies.

  • Spray diluted lemongrass oil in the house. For that, add 10 drops of oil to 2 ounces of hot water. It will help to kill not only fruit flies, but also ants, spiders and other creepy crawlers. I understand that lavender oil does the same.

  • Most bugs don't like cedar wood. Have plenty of cedar wood snips or balls (for moths) in your kitchen en between your fruit.

  • Hang fly strips in such a position that both their sides are exposed to flies. Fruit flies will stick to the trap and die.

Now you have the best home remedies for fruit flies. I hope this way you can enjoy your fruits without the flies.
